Food Fermentation, Building Community in the Kitchen

Published in March 2024 in The McDowell News, Written by Audrey Moore

Learn the ins and outs of fermentation in an engaging six-week course titled  "Food Fermentation Series”, a kick off for Building Community in the Kitchen. Tim Burke of Idle Acre Farms will host the series in the Foothills Food Hub Kitchen on Tuesdays from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm from March 19th until April 23rd.

Participants of the fermentation series will be able to explore the microscopic world of fermentation, guided by fermentation enthusiast and agricultural educator Tim Burke. Attendees will explore the history, culture, and chemistry of 6 different kinds of fermentation, including sourdough, kombucha, kimchi, tempeh, kvass and more!

In addition to learning the history and culture, attendees can participate in hands-on activities, learning the steps in preparing various ferments. At the end of each class, participants can take home a finished product from each session. Attendees will also be able to observe microscopic organisms responsible for fermentation under a microscope!

Participants can register for classes individually as their interest and schedule allows. If you are interested in the entire series, you can register for all six courses at a discounted rate. Regardless of your experience with fermentation, this series offers a welcoming space to connect with others in the community and expand your fermentation skills. Spaces are limited, so we encourage you to register today to secure a spot in this enriching and flavorful series.

Interested participants can sign up for the class by visiting www.foothillsfoodhub.org. For more information about the classes contact Tim Burke at idleacresfarmnc@gmail.com.
